what can Google home do?

Google home is a growing family of devices that are actually quite wonderful. They range from the smallest google home mini to a supersized music orientated google home max. There is a google home with a screen and I can’t tell you how amazing this thing is in the kitchen where I decided to get the most out of it.

However, when I got my first one of these devices I was so excited that I almost broke the box trying to get it out. I plugged it in and did the very easy set up process and then I was wondering what to say. In fairness the device does give you a little selection of things to try out but once that has gone you can be sitting there awkwardly wanting to try things out but not sure what to say. So today we are going to find out what can google home do?

what can google home do

A music paradise

For sound snobs which I was once a proud member of, the google home mini may not be the best listening experience. It does kick out some amazing sound for such a small device but if you are one of these people then the Google home Max maybe the way forward for you.

These devices are simply amazing for people that love music. You can just say  “OK Google play music by… ” and away it goes playing your music goodness. You can ask for certain tracks, playlists and even get radio stations playing through your little smart speaker. Even if you do not know the name of the artist or song believe it or not you can sing it and every time it has found the song. I kid you not! Try it, you may feel like a fool at first but it actually works.

Ask a question you will find the answers

The best thing I can say here is when you go to the google search engine and type in something to search all those things you ask can actually be asked to the speaker instead. It is a much easier way of getting the answers you need and anything that requires more than a simple answer she tells you that the information has been sent to your phone. The google device actually recognizes your voice and sends it to the appropriate phone. For example if you wish to get directions to a local restaurant just ask and the google home will send the maps direct to your phone. You can set up where your home is, your work etc in the settings which is always worth doing. You can even just ask after setting these up what’s the traffic like to work and it will let you know.

Its not only questions you can ask, you can also ask it for the current news or weather and it will let you know. You can also use IFTTT (IF THIS THEN THAT) which is an online service which allows you to add more features. So if it is going to rain you could use this service to get Google Home to remind you to dress accordingly.

Watch films and shows

Yes it is a smart speaker, well apart from the google home hub but it can also be joined by the chrome cast devices. These devices together work wonders and if you sync your Netflix accounts you can just ask it to play a show you fancy watching and it will cast straight to the television. You can also do this for you tube and it is actually quite amazing. I would like an actual television that has google assistant built in but that’s a topic for another day.

Reminders, alarms and timers

I used to be quite mentally sharp but as I have got older I find myself sometimes getting a little distracted or completely forgetting things all together. The Google home device has worked absolute miracles and so far so good I have not forgotten a thing. Its nothing to do with me of course and my brain power is not increasing in the process but it has made a massive help. The biggest thing for me was when I was cooking, I would put something on to cook and then go on the laptop only to realize that the smell of burning was entering the room. With timers now I can just say “hey google set a timer for ten minutes” or however long and I no longer need to eat cremated food!

The alarms also come in handy as I have a wonderful habit of pressing snooze so many times that I tend to be in a bit of a rush in the morning. With the added extra of these devices it’s just another reminder that sleep will have to wait until later. You can also set music alarms so if you fancy being woke up to your favorite song in the morning go and treat yourself.

Reminders have also managed to help me out so much. My son has so many doctors and hospital appointments that half the time I don’t even know what day it is. I have now never been late or forgotten a single appointment and it’s all down to the speaker.

Don’t forget also that you can set up to do lists and add things to a shopping list if needs be. It is handy to get a reminder of the things you really wanted but didn’t have in the cupboard at the time.

Control your world

As with this sites main focus being home automation it would be silly not to mention it of course. The smart speaker really becomes much more as soon as you can set the brightness, color, warmth of your home and you can even set schedules for when they come on or off.

It doesn’t just stop at lights of course, robot vacuums can be commanded to do a bit of your cleaning for you. Blinds can be open or shut when you require, heating can be turned up or on/off. The possibilities are endless with a smart home and it is going to get much bigger over the coming years. So google home sits fairly comfortably here as I have had no issue with the speaker doing what I ask it to do.

Something funny

Sometimes you are sitting at home wondering what to do next with your evening why not ask google to tell you a joke? Granted the jokes do need some work but it’s a nice little addition. Some times just asking it some questions give funny results and it seems to have a personality all on it’s own.

You can also play small games with it too which have always gone down well when I have friends over and is always a good icebreaker.

Making calls

It may sound crazy but you can also make calls using google home and with the introduction of the google home hub you can also make video calls. These calls are free as it is over WIFI and the clever thing recognizes your voice and knows whos contacts to look through. You may feel this is a little invasive and can be turned off if needs be but why not give it a go?

Conclusion

I hope you have found this post informative and gives you some ideas of things to try. These devices are so funny, amazing and helpful I could not recommend them more. If I have missed anything please don’t hesitate to add it in the comments and if you have any funny moments that have happened I would love to hear that too.

  1. I like the features but what makes you trust Google home in terms of privacy and security?

I like what I can do with the device just I have have trust issues with them.

    1. Yes I do understand your trust concerns as I have had my issues with this subject myself. There are things you can do to protect yourself but in all honesty this is a thing we are all dealing with on a daily basis. All platforms like face book, your phones apple, Samsung and so on all do this practice on a daily basis and I don’t think we should completely trust a company that has its main goal in making money. With GDPR coming in I think that certain things are changing with peoples outlook toward privacy and I also believe that is the only way we can protect ourselves now and in the future. We have to make sure that the powers that make the laws understand our wishes. Thanks for your engaging comment it is much appreciated

  2. Thank you Adam for this post! Wow Google home seems more intelligent and intuitive than Alexa. That’s impressive how it can recognize your voice and know which phone to send the directions to.

That’s pretty cool too how Google home has the function where you can sing a song you don’t know and it will tell the title for you. This is a pretty useful feature especially because there are times when I just don’t remember the song. There’s tons of possibilities with this device!

    Thanks again Andrew!

    1. Not a problem mark and I am glad you enjoyed it. I have got the Alexa devices and both have good points but personally I prefer the google devices. It is more of a matter of taste though in all honesty and its better saying Alexa that hey google. I will be writing a post on the Alexa devices too so people can decide what they prefer. Your comment is much appreciated.

  3. Wow, this device sounds amazing! This is something I know my husband would use daily (especially when washing the dishes- haha, thanks honey!) Thank you for your review Adam, I’ll definitely be looking into this product for his upcoming birthday. 🙂

    1. That’s how I got it originally my other half got it for my birthday and I haven’t looked back. When I am cooking in the kitchen and feeding the baby we sing and dance! I bet the neighbours love us but my son has a great time.

  4. Thank you kindly for this excellent article. I do try to keep up to date with what is what in the world of technology and gadgets. Am I correct in assuming that google home somewhat rivals Amazon’s Alexa?

    1. It is the Alexa device was out before the google home and I have one of them also. They have bonuses also and will be posting about the Alexa devices next! Technology is also a nightmare to keep up with isn’t it? it seems that there is almost a new thing every day

  5. I really enjoyed reading your article, it was so informative. All I knew about Google home that you can talk to it, but I had no idea what it can actually do. It seems to have so many features, especially as music lover I was so surprised that it can find your song just by singing it, wow that is truly amazing. Connection to Netflix and YouTube sounds like a great feature too. After reading your article I’m really tempted to try Google home device. Thank for writing this great review!

    1. thank you for your comment Marius they are great devices and you can pick them up pretty cheap now so always good for a little treat. I am glad you enjoyed the post and I appreciate you taking the time to comment =)

  6. Wow, very informative!
I cannot imagine what Google will do on the next and future.
And something amazes me, that Google always offered something beyond expectation
Or maybe because I still have been living in ancient life. Thanks for your info.

    1. yeah technology never stops amazing me and who knows where we will be in ten years! I am still dreaming of the flying car myself. thanks for your comment.

  7. The world of Google home is still new to me.
I need to research it further and check out in more detail but your website covers off some good information about it.

Is it better to go down this path rather than Apples offering?

    1. Great question it is mostly down to personal taste really, Apple are amazing at most things but it can get quite pricy. With alexa/google home you can find cheaper products which are just as good if not better in some cases. However some people are much more comfortable with siri so again its down to the users experience I think. Thanks for your comment
